Nowadays Clancy Can’t Even Sing var Buffalo Springfields første single, som udkom i august 1966, og det store gennembrud for både Stephen Stills og Neil Young – selvom det var lige ved slet ikke at blive til noget. Oprindeligt havde første single “Go and Say Goodbye” af Stephen Stills på A-siden og Youngs “Nowadays Clancy Can’t Even Sing” på B-siden, før producenter gav efter for presset fra distributører og vendte siderne om.

På den måde blev Stills og Young sat op til intern rivalisering lige fra start. Stills havde følelsen af at Buffalo Springfield var hans band, og her blev han så overgået af sin leadguitarist allerede på første udgivelse. Det var mere end hvad Stills kunne æde, og kompromiet blev derfor at Richie Furay sang nummeret. Furay havde også selv sange, han gerne ville have med på Buffaloe Springfield albummet, men de gik tabt i magtkampen mellem Stills og Young.

Neil Young havde skrevet sangen allerede i 1965 kort efter at være vendt tilbage til Yorkville fra en række optrædener i Toronto, i en periode hvor hans forsøg på en solokarriere ikke havde mødt meget positiv respons. Kort tid efter besluttede Young sig for at køre til Los Angeles for at prøve lykken der.
