Old Laughing Lady

The Old Laughing Lady er én af de mest stemningsfulde sange fra Neil Youngs debutalbum fra 1968. Sangen skiller sig ud på pladen med sin mørke, næsten spøgelsesagtige atmosfære, hvor Neil er akkompagneret af klaver, strygere og kor – et lydbillede, der peger mere mod barok-pop end den akustiske folk, mange ellers forbinder med hans tidlige periode.

Tekstmæssigt er sangen mystisk og åben for fortolkning, som så meget andet i Neil Youngs univers. The Old Laughing Lady kan være alt fra en figur i en drøm til en metafor for afhængighed eller døden selv.

En af de mere kuriøse historier knyttet til sangen stammer fra tiden omkring albumindspilningerne i Sunset Sound i Los Angeles. Producer David Briggs syntes, sangen lød for pæn i en tidlig version. Løsningen blev en håndfuld venner, som tilføjede korstemmer mod nummerets slutning. Det siges, at koret blev indsunget af en flok lettere berusede bekendte, som lige var kommet fra en stripklub på Sunset Boulevard.

Om det passer, ved kun Neil og Briggs, men uanset hvad, har The Old Laughing Lady en særpræget blanding af skønhed og uhygge, som har gjort den til en fanfavorit – især blandt dem, der sætter pris på Neil Youngs mere obskure perler.
