Don’t Let It Bring You Down er fra Neil Youngs tredje studiealbum After the Gold Rush fra 1970. Sangen er også med på Crosby, Stills, Nash & Youngs live album 4 Way Street fra 1971, ligesom der også findes fremragende live udgaver med Young solo på for eksempel Live At Massey Hall 1971 og Live At The Cellar Door 1970.

Young spiller sangen i dobbelt drop C stemning, som ligner dobbelt drop D; dog med den forskel, at hele guitaren er stemt ned et helt trin først. Særligt i soloversionerne giver det en helt speciel mørk og blød lyd til den akustiske guitar, som står i skærende kontrast til Youngs skærende høje vokal på nummeret. For den ligger virkelig højt!

Don’t Let It Bring you Down er blevet fortolket af en lang række forskellige kunstnere, lige fra Sting, Annie Lenox, Chris Cornell og Guns N’ Roses  til vores egne danske Kellermench, der har en mørk og foruroligende version af  nummeret med på deres selvbetitlede debutalbum fra 2009.

Dance Dance Dance

Dance, Dance, Dance er skrevet af Neil Young, men optrådte første gang på Crazy Horses debutalbum Crazy Horse i 1971. Det eneste album fra bandet med Danny Whitten i front, indspillet uden Young. Sangen blev faktisk oprindeligt indspillet af Young og Crazy Horse i 1969 til et country-rock-album, der aldrig blev udgivet. Crazy Horse fik så lov til at indspille nummeret alene til deres debutalbum et par pår senere.

Young spillede selv Dance, Dance, Dance live ved en række koncerter fra 1969 til 1971, ofte som sidste nummer at gå hjem på. Live versioner fra Carnagie Hall 1970 og Live at Massey Hall 1971 er værd at tjekke ud. Nummeret var også på sætlisten, som sidste sang i BBS’s tv-optagedelive session fra 1971, som kan ses ovenfor.

Young genbrugte i øvrigt melodien fra Dance, Dance, Dance til en anden af sine sange, Love Is a Rose, som Linda Ronstadt fik et hit med. Han har siden skiftet lidt imellem, hvilken af de to tekster, han synger. Og i hvert fald er de to sange aldrig at finde på samme sætliste.

Cowgirl In The Sand

Cowgirl in the Sand er fra Neil Youngs andet studiealbum Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere fra 1969. Sangen af én af tre sange fra albummet, som blev skrevet på én og samme dag, mens Young lå hjemme med influenza og høj feber. De to andre numre, der kom ud af febervildelsen var Cinnamon Girl og Down By The River.

Everybod Knows This Is Nowwhere er første album med Crazy Horse, og ikke mindst Danny Whitten på den anden guitar og korsang. En hæsblæsende 10-minutters udgave af Cowgirl In The Sand lukker albummet, og et perfekt eksempel på den skramlende skønhed, som Crazy Horses har stået for lige siden.

Cowgirl in the Sand har lige siden været omdrejningspunktet i mange Crazy Horse-koncerter, ofte strukket ud i knapt 20 minytters længde. Lyt for eksempel til versionen på Live at the Fillmore East fra kl. 1970.

Men sangen har også flere gange været på sætlisten under Youngs akustiske solo shows, hvor den sparsomme instrumentering med bare Youngs akustiske guitar, virkelig demonstrerer Youngs evner som sanger. Vokalen ligger faktisk ekstremt højt, men Young synger melodien, uden på noget tidspunkt at slå over i falset. En af de bedste soloversioner kan findes på Live At Massey Hall fra 1971.
